SMU Module Review: WRIT001 Academic Writing

Hard to study for because there’s no clear definition of what’s right or wrong. I found it helpful to apply all the concepts learnt in class to the assignments and consult with Prof to get a clearer understanding of what he wants to see.

SMU Module Review: STAT151 Introduction to Statistical Theory

I was pre-assigned STAT151 (Now COR-STAT1203) in AY1920 Term 1 (Your mileage may vary). The course is meant to provide you with a basic understanding of statistics, as Economics is heavily tied with statistics. From my interactions with my peers, different Professors teach the module differently. Basic probability is necessary for statistics, so both are usually covered. However, different some Professors place a greater emphasis on probability and covers more topics in that field while others do the minimum and focus more on Statistics. Having done statistics before would be good, but not necessarily advantageous. Instead of having a graphing calculator to compute like in the past, most of the calculation done now are purely by formulae. Being comfortable with numbers and solving equations is much more beneficial as many of the concepts will always be new, so being able to comfortably understand them is key.

SMU Module Review: POSC101 Intro to Public Policy

This course introduces students to the conceptual and pragmatic skills necessary for analyzing and devising public policy. On the one hand, the course exposes students to the methods and concepts that make up the tool-box of the contemporary policy analyst. On the other hand, by using these tools to make sense of real-life policy issues and political processes in South-East Asia and elsewhere, the course also introduces students to the more pragmatic “craft” aspects of producing incisive analysis relevant to policy actors in real policy-making environments.

SMU Module Review: OPIM201 Operation Management

The module was largely quantitiative with some theory mixed in. Need to practice a lot through the practice questions given in class and the practice papers. However, the mid terms and final exams will definitely have some tricky questions that he did not go through in class and that will be the differentiator for the module

SMU Module Review: OBHR101 Management of People at Work

MPW is a really boring module that doesn’t offer much to learn. It’s generally about – you guessed it – managing people. The content is mostly just fluff. It does touch on organisational behaviour and some basic human psychology, but most of the content seems common-sensical, to the point where I found myself questioning why this is a university module. The textbook is not necessary if your prof provides useful slides (mine did but I understand from a friend that this is not the case with every prof), otherwise it’ll be mandatory since you have pretty much nothing else to refer to. The test(s) is just a measure of how well you can memorise the textbook content and vomit it out during the exams.
